Data Sources & Methodology
Data last updated: October 2025 · Updated when USPTO updates fee schedule
How the Numbers Work
USPTO fees are from the official fee schedule (TEAS Plus vs. TEAS Standard rates differ). Attorney preparation costs use Clio survey median rates for IP attorneys in the relevant metro area. Office action response costs use median attorney hours reported for trademark prosecution. Total filing-to-registration cost includes government fees plus attorney fees at each stage.
Data Sources
USPTO Official Fee Schedule
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office current filing fees for trademark applications, responses, and maintenance. Updated periodically by the USPTO.
Clio Legal Trends Report
Annual survey of 70,000+ legal professionals covering billing rates by practice area and geography. The primary source for attorney fee estimates.
ABA IP Attorney Fee Surveys
American Bar Association surveys on intellectual property attorney billing rates used to cross-validate Clio data.
USPTO Examination Statistics
Published approval and office action rates by international class and goods/services type. Source for application success rate estimates.
Limitations
Attorney fees vary significantly by experience, firm size, and market. Some marks require more prosecution work based on the strength of the mark and the goods/services description. Office action probability is a historical average for the class; your mark's risk depends on factors an attorney needs to assess. International registration costs are not included.
About Estimates
The numbers on this site are estimates built from published data. They're a starting point for budgeting and comparison, not a quote. Your actual cost depends on specifics no calculator can know: your vendor, your timing, your circumstances.
Nothing on this site is financial, legal, or professional advice. If the decision is significant, talk to a professional.
